Dia de Portugal 2017
Lunch in the Restaurant Benfica e Faro
Sunday, 11 June 2017 | Gastronomy
To celebrate the National Holiday of Portugal we went out for lunch to our favourite fish & seafood restaurant at the marina in Faro. We know this place for many years and appreciate the excellent quality and the ample choice as well as the great view from the terrace to the historical old town of Faro with its many stork’s nests - fully occupied at this time of the year. As starter, we had grilled and fresh oysters and búzias (spiny murex), followed by a grilled turbot as main course.
The national holiday of Portugal is celebrated on June 10, the day Luís Vaz de Camões, one of Portugal’s most important poets died. He created the national poem “Os Lusiades” (the Lusiades), singing the history of the Portuguese nation with emphasis on the glorious Era of Portuguese Discoveries. Since his exact date of birth is unknown, he is commemorated on the day of his death on June 10, 1580. In the same year Portugal became part of the Spanish kingdom after the decline of the house of Avis and regained its independence only in 1640 after an insurrection. Since then the 10 of June has been a holiday of national importance.
